When and how did Smut Peddlers come about?
Julia: I was living in Redondo Beach, CA and Gish was my next door neighbor. He had
asked my boyfriend at the time if he wanted to play drums in his band, he couldn’t and told
Gish to ask me. I said “ok.” He had a guitar player already and I believe he had his sights
set on John as a singer.
How would you describe Smut Peddlers to someone who had never heard them?
Julia: Good noise.
What got you into punk music?
Julia: It sounded good to me. I guess the same way some people listen to top 40 and like it,
I liked punk music.
Everyone’s first time is memorable, what was the first punk show you went to ?
Julia: My first punk show was a party where local bands played, I was about 12-13 and
there was beer.
What do you think of the 21st century politically correct Hippy-ish version of
punks?
Julia: Is that like “beard-core”? Pete from the Stitches has this theory about punk and
beards, and it is an odd phenomenon. It seems that punk is just a common thing these
days. There are chain stores in malls like Hot Topic, you see newscasters with their “faux-
hawk” haircuts… if I really was too concerned with it, I’d probably go on a shooting
rampage, or become a Buddhist monk.
Tell us about the other bands that the members of Smut Peddlers have been in
or are currently in?
Julia: I know John was in previous bands, but I’m not sure if they had songs or played
shows. This is the only band I’ve ever been in. Gish was in White Limo (a side project) and
Prospect was in a few bands back in Cleveland, but I don’t know their names. Currently, I
think we’re all just playing with Smut Peddlers.
How did Smut Peddlers get hooked up with getting “Let’s get fucked up” on the
Jackass: The Movie soundtrack and the show Wildboyz?
Julia: We’ve been friends with the Jackass guys for many years, back in the Big Brother
Magazine days. They asked for a song, we gave it to them. We have a video for that song
we will release some day.
Any funny tour stories?
Julia: Hundreds. I haven’t really had enough coffee to type one.
If you could meet a serial killer from the past who would it be?
Julia: Probably Manson or John Wayne Gacy.
Of all the Smut Peddler songs which is your personal favorite?
Julia: It changes, but right now, it’s one of the new songs. It doesn’t have a title yet. Of the
old songs, I guess it would be, Surfer’s Grave.
When do you expect the next Smut Peddlers album to be released and what’s
been the hold up?
Julia: Well, that’s a good question. We have the songs, John has the lyrics. It’s a matter of
the two locking in and flowing well together. Could be a week, could be 6 months before
that happens, ya never know. Hopefully by Summer of 2008.
What would your porn name be?
Julia: Well, if you go by the “first pet name and first street you lived on” thing, mine would
be “Abbey Crest”.
Tell us something about yourself that might shock people.
Julia: Shock? Hmmmm. I’m not that shocking. I don’t have any extra fingers or toes or a
parasitic twin or anything cool like that.
If you could travel through time, when would you go back to and why?
Julia: I’d invent YouTube before those kids and sell it to Google for billions.
