How did it all begin? I was walking down MacDougal Street one day in 1963 when
Buzzy Linhart accosted me and convinced me to sing in his band (mainly because I had
longer hair than The Pretty Things).

Who were your original influences? Bo Diddley, The Moonglows, JoAnn Campbell,
Muddy Waters, Little Walter, The Cadillacs, Ruth Brown, Little Richard, Ray Charles,
Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Professor Longhair, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Howling
Wolf, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Gene Vincent, The Jayhawks (L.A.), James
Baldwin, Bayard Rustin and The Spanish Anarchists. Because they spoke to my desires.

Who are your current influences?
Same as above.

What is your proudest moment as a musician and why? Being savagely libeled and
defamed in Gordon Sumner's autobiography.

What is your most embarrassing moment in punk and why?
Presenting a wasted Sid Vicious at Max's Kansas City.

What do you think would have been your path through life if you had never
gotten involved with music?
Lay about.

Tell us something about yourself that few people are aware of.
As a teenager, I had a crush on JoAnn Campbell.

When you look back on your musical path to this point, what are your deepest
regrets?
Not worrying enough about the money.

If you had the opportunity to start over, what would you change?
I'd negotiate a better deal with Tommy Dean.

Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
Myself, 'cause I don't pay enough attention to the wisdom of others.

Please summarize the highlights & lowlights of your musical career.
Too many highlights to list.
Too few lowlights to bother with.

What are your thoughts on the current "Punk" scene?
It's 'folk' music for kids who wish to express their emotions without being arrested.

How much has it changed or stayed the same since you got into it?
Unfortunately, since the beginning of the '80s, too many kids have believed that talent
wasn't required to be in a band. Also, as Arthur Stevenson of SeaMonster says, "The
problem with bands today is they don't know who Howlin' Wolf is."

What are your plans musically in the future?
I hope to do more recording of music that deserves to be preserved.
