-------------------------------------------------------
When I started Pastepunk during my first year of college, the plan was to write reviews of local shows and CDs that I had owned. There were no other goals and no big ambitions. The word "blog" had yet to be coined and the MP3 will still an innocent technological breakthrough. I never thought that my hobby would become such a substantial part of my life for the next 10 years. In that time period, we have seen the internet turn the independent music world upside down, and have been there to document the fruits and spoils along the way. - Jordan Baker, founder of Pastepunk.com

In punk rock, stating that you've been around for a decade is essentially admitting that you're an ancient vessel amidst a sea of doe-eyed, baby-faced, sometimes-talented (but often not) newbies who have barely tested the chilly DIY waters before sailing for warmer shores. Not to say that crusty old people rule, but there are certainly a handful that possess a nugget or two of wisdom and should be looked upon with reverence and admiration.

Such is the case with well-respected, often-imitated-but-never-duplicated webzine PASTEPUNK.COM.

Ten years ago to the day, Jordan Baker created the site as an outlet against boredom and vapidity of dorm room life. And while diligently sticking it out for so long is impressive, all this talk about who has the most notches on their studded punk rock belt or more indie cred means nothing unless you're contributing something relevant and interesting...and more importantly, doing it with passion and unshakable dedication. Jordan was one of the first people with whom I ever worked when I entered the fray almost nine years ago; I can state without hesitation that he and Pastepunk measure up to those qualifications.

With an archive of more than 10,000 news posts, 3000 album reviews and 300 interviews from bands such as Bad Religion, Rise Against, Thrice, Dropkick Murphys, H20, Less Than Jake, Bane, Set Your Goals, Strike Anywhere, Modern Life Is War, Against Me!, Crime In Stereo, Paint It Black, Thursday and AFI, Pastepunk's quality of content ranks up there with the best. What's more is that Jordan and his staff not only entertain on a daily basis, they do so with thought-provoking commentary and discerning tastes. In the words of the site's creator:

As a teen, I spent countless hours reading MRR, Punk Planet and Flipside, obsessing over music reviews and searching for a consistent voice of recommendation. I have tried to be that source with Pastepunk, relishing the role of being a filter in a world where the number of bands is simply overwhelming. It hasn't always been easy, but the relentless, addictive search to discover the next great hardcore, punk, metal or indie band is a desire that runs through my bones. I've always said that I'll keep doing Pastepunk until it isn't fun anymore and it means the world to me that we're still here.

To mark the occasion, Jordan and I have gathered 25 songs from BEARTRAP bands, creating the Pastepunk 10th Anniversary MP3 Compilation. It includes a number of previously unreleased songs, rare and live material, demo recordings for upcoming releases and several exclusive tracks recorded specifically for the comp. All 25 MP3s are completely free, but only available for the next month - until November 16th. For more information, go here, or directly download a zip file (including cover art and detailed information about every song) here.

And by all means, feel free to pass around the link or post it on your website!

Pastepunk is no stranger to compilations, releasing Broken Lamps and Hardcore Memories Volume 1 and Volume 2 in 2002 and 2004 respectively, the latter of which was exclusively distributed by Suburban Home Records. The company, through its Vinyl Collective store, is helping out once again, handling order fulfillment for the limited edition Pastepunk Coffee Mugs. There are only 144 of these bad boys available, so grab yours here!

In conclusion, I'd like to to thank Pastepunk.com for 10 very memorable years and for giving all the Beartrap bands a chance to be part of this anniversary commemoration.

Pastepunk would also like to add, "thanks to all of the bands, record labels and management and PR firms that keep us well-stocked with new music and information, and our advertising partners as well. Without your support, we would probably have a lot more photos of cute babies chewing on stuffed animals."

SYLVIE RELEASES TREES AND SHADE ARE OUR ONLY FENCES

Three years since the release of An Electric Trace, Canadian indie quintet Sylvie is brimming with anticipation to present their new full-length Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences to the world. The album will be released in Canada October 21st, 2008 through Smallman Records.

Recorded and produced by the legendary J. Robbins (Against Me, Jets to Brazil, Jawbreaker) in Baltimore, MD, Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences exceeds expectations, succinctly balancing songs that are musically complex and persuasively melodic. Noticeably more focused, Sylvie’s gorgeous arrangements have a more finely tuned sense of precision. The addition of Erin Passmore on keyboards and vocals results in a welcomed new layer of pop happiness and stunning group harmonies.

Lyrically the album exudes a sense of cautious hope for the future through songs about environmental fears, war, heartbreak and the passing of time. Lead singer Joel Passmore explains,

“The lyrics on this album tell more stories; they reflect the reasons we have to open our mouths, not just filler. In some ways they have a more somber tone, but in other cases songs talk about first loves and coming home. There is a bit of trepidation about the future at times, but I think it’s balanced with a light heartedness in the music. I guess it reflects our hopes as well.”

Formed in Regina, SK in 1999, Sylvie debuted with their first full-length album I Wish I Was Driving in 2003, garnering the band a nomination for outstanding independent album of the year at the WCMAs. An Electric Trace was released in 2005 through Smallman Records. Sylvie has played with Minus the Bear, Pony Up, Hot Hot Heat, Controller Controller, Death From Above 1979, Wintersleep, and Small Sins, and has showcased at CMJ, NXNE, CMW and SXSW. In 2006 Sylvie won the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award, which was presented to the band during a live CBC recording at NXNE.

Sylvie will be touring North America in support of Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences; watch here for updates:

Sylvie, an absolutely breathtaking rock band …
~Dose

A tidy little album of post-punk rock full of maturity, aggression and beauty.

Frankly, no one in Canadian music these days makes a sound like this. Sylvie did, with synthesised keyboard loops and teasing washes of guitar squall over the driving beats from that amazing rhythm section. Arenas, cold and silent as tombs, await their crazed sound.

THE REVIVAL TOUR KICKS OFF THIS MONTH FEATURING CHUCK RAGAN (Hot Water Music), TIM BARRY (Avail) & BEN NICHOLS (Lucero)

THE REVIVAL TOUR KICKS OFF THIS MONTH FEATURING CHUCK RAGAN (Hot Water Music), TIM BARRY (Avail) & BEN NICHOLS (Lucero)

Los Angeles, CA - September 8, 2008 - In a match made in folk-punk heaven, Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan, Avail's Tim Barry and Lucero's Ben Nichols will embark on The Revival Tour this month, a series of shows that will see all three artists playing solo sets as well as performing on each others material. There will also be a number of guests joining shorter legs of the tour including Tom Gabel of Against Me!, Jesse Malin, Kevin Seconds from 7 Seconds, Jon Snograss from Drag The River, Sundowner, Austin Lucas & Frank Turner.

"All of the tours that I've done since I've been doing this solo stuff have in some way or the other ended up with a bunch of friends onstage by the end of the night," Ragan explains, adding that each performer will be joined by a backing band that will change based on geography and include many of their peers and previous tour mates. "I've always loved seeing that and now I'm absolutely loving creating something like that with good friends who think and believe along the same lines."

The tour will mark Ragan's final run in support of last year's solo debut Feast Or Famine (SideOneDummy), after which he'll begin pre-production on his next album for SideOneDummy. Barry is touring in support of his own folk debut, Rivanna Junction. Although the two musicians met in the nineties while fronting two of the most influential DIY punk bands of the era, in recent years both songwriters have begun to explore folk and bluegrass compositions, making this tour a perfect pairing of ideologies and instrumentation.

Nichols entered the picture when him and Ragan recently toured in January, but it wasn't until this year's SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, that the plan was solidified. "We were both doing our own thing and weren't there in conjunction, but ended up sitting down for some drinks after one of the long days," Ragan explains. "We agreed on a time, shook hands and kept on drinking." While the tour will feature individual sets from each artist, it will be more reminiscent of the folk tradition of involving multiple artist collaborations-and each performer will have guests coming on and off stage, including the three primary songwriters who plan to hunkered down in Barry's Richmond, Virginia backyard this summer to learn each other's respective tracks.

Our friends The Wish You Weres video (SO GOOD!)

March 13, 2008

Response to hate mail - as requested by readers

To whom it may concern,

In response to the email message you sent me, please show me where in the review (in which I was asked by this band to complete) that there is something so biased it can be deemed slanderous. Please show me where the review that was completed is any different from a Movie Review, a Broadway Review, or even a Food Critics Review.

Had you simple asked me to remove your review I would have thought it was hilarious case of sour grapes, but would have no problem removing the review. However, once you attempted to strong arm & intimidate me with threats of legal action to remove my opinion from my website, (which again the band asked of me), then I must firmly stand my ground and stand up for my rights as tax paying citizen of the United States.

It is within my (as any other member of the united states) constitutional right to voice my opinion. If you want to take me to court in regard to a 1st amendment right of freedom of press, I am sure that there are plenty of lawyers who will stand firm on my rights and do so pro bono.

To review the 1st Amendment please refer to -
